What Is Card Grading?

Card grading has become increasingly popular within the hobby as collectors look to have their cards professionally evaluated and preserved. Grading involves a third-party authentication service examining a card based on several key factors, Centering, Corners, Edges, Surface

Once these elements are reviewed, the card is assigned an overall grade on a scale from 1 to 10. A grade of 10, known as “Gem Mint,” represents a card that is considered nearly flawless by the grading company.

While many companies offer grading services, three firms are widely recognized as industry leaders: Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA), Beckett Grading Services (BGS), and SGC (formerly Sports Card Guaranty Corporation). Each grading company has its own strengths, standards, and benefits, and certain cards may be better suited for one service over another.

Card Lounge NJ is here to help guide you through the grading process and assist you in choosing the best grading option for your cards

Benefits of grading cards: protection, easier buying/selling, and knowing rarity.

Why Grade Your Cards?

Simply put, card grading protects and preserves your collection while making buying, selling, and auctioning cards far more straightforward. When a card is ungraded, condition can be subjective—one seller may consider a card “mint,” while a buyer may view the same card as only “near mint.” Depending on the card, that difference in opinion can mean a price gap of hundreds or even thousands of dollars, potentially preventing a deal altogether.

Professional grading removes much of this uncertainty by providing an unbiased, third-party evaluation. Graded card values are easy to reference through online marketplaces, auction results, and pricing tools, allowing both buyers and sellers to operate with confidence. Collectors can also view population reports, which show how many examples of a specific card exist at each grade level—an important factor in determining rarity and value.

Once a card is graded, it is sealed in a protective holder, commonly known as a “slab,” eliminating the need to handle the card directly and ensuring long-term protection.

Steps for grading cards: drop off, review and submit, then pick up graded cards.
